Julia Fiona Roberts is the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus, and Walter Grady Roberts. She was born on 28 October 1967, in Atlanta. She is an extended family of Robertses, the 4th generation that reside in the Atlanta area beginning with her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. She inherited her father's interest in the theater at an early stage. While studying at Emory University, he performed in a variety of productions in Atlanta. In 1953, he joined the Air Force. While stationed in Biloxi in Mississippi acted in an production along with Betty Lou Bredemus. The couple married in 1955 and their first child Eric Anthony was born in 1956. Walter as well as his spouse left their Air Force service in the year 1957 at which time they were enrolled Walter at Tulane University. In 1960 the family moved to Decatur Georgia where Walter began working with Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In 1964, Walter as well as Betty Lou began production on a local Saturday morning children's TV show titled Bum Bum and His Buddies that they designed and funded. In 1964, Betty Lou and Walter founded their own organization called the Actors and Writers Workshop. The workshop lasted about six years. In 1965, they welcomed two new children: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
